Why won't my G5 tower connect to my wifi?

I may be mistaken, but do I need to use the antenna in addition to the airport extreme card? I don’t have one, so could I settle for a PCI airport card with an attached antenna? Would that connect the Mac to Internet without a stock card??
I have the card all the way into the motherboard, and the antenna cable IS connected. However, I don’t have the external antenna extension that connects to the back of the tower.

I’m not sure I understand your question. Do you already have an Airport Extreme card? They don’t come with antennas, as you may know already.

But your G5 should have an antenna in it already. It’s a thin black cable with a silver connector that plugs into the card. If you’ve haven’t connected that antenna, that could explain why you aren’t able to connect to Wifi.

Refer to the manual here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/AirPort_Card.pdf

If I’ve misunderstood you, post back.

"I don’t have the external antenna"

Aha — now I understand. The problem you’d have with any other internal card is the same one you have now: The G5′s case blocks the signal.

I found two do-it-yourself fixes that reportedly work: (1) Open or remove the side of the case; (2) Insert something thin and metallic, like a piece of wire, in the hole where the antenna’s connector pin would go. Either should at least get you connected for now. (#1 will render the case cooling fan useless, though.)

If you want a more proper, long-term solution, searching for "airport external antenna" shows they aren’t hard to find. Six have sold recently on eBay for $15 – $20, and several are up for sale now. Several online stores offer them, too, although they’re $25 – $30. And there are USB dongle-type adapters.
