Any name brand card or card that uses a typical chipset will be fine, the only time people really run into issues these days is laptops with screwy wireless firmware or USB network adapters.

Did you read the WIFI Support in the Documents? Just curious because it lists all of them that work well....nearly any of them will work with ndis wrapper installed (uses the Windows drivers that way). So color me confused.... try this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported
Which has lists like this one for "Linksys" cards that work and what it takes
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsLinksys#PCI

Also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs
Yep, lots of help and lots of information but it is there.

Add - I wouldn't waste a PCI slot - USE USB, save a slot, get better signal since you can mount it remote and get it away from the computer box!

Oh you can also visit the Penguin Store http://www.thinkpenguin.com/ they sell specifically for LINUX.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you already have an Airport Extreme card? They don't come with antennas, as you may know already.

But your G5 should have an antenna in it already. It's a thin black cable with a silver connector that plugs into the card. If you've haven't connected that antenna, that could explain why you aren't able to connect to Wifi.

Refer to the manual here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/AirPort_Card.pdf

If I've misunderstood you, post back.
--------------------
"I don't have the external antenna"

Aha -- now I understand. The problem you'd have with any other internal card is the same one you have now: The G5's case blocks the signal.

I found two do-it-yourself fixes that reportedly work: (1) Open or remove the side of the case; (2) Insert something thin and metallic, like a piece of wire, in the hole where the antenna's connector pin would go. Either should at least get you connected for now. (#1 will render the case cooling fan useless, though.)

If you want a more proper, long-term solution, searching for "airport external antenna" shows they aren't hard to find. Six have sold recently on eBay for $15 - $20, and several are up for sale now. Several online stores offer them, too, although they're $25 - $30. And there are USB dongle-type adapters.

That's why it needs an external antenna. You can use a PCI wifi card or a USB dongle as long as it's Mac compatible. However, it would probably be easier just to grab a G5 wifi antenna on eBay or a third party parts site.

According to Apple it's the extreme card that needs to be installed. 1st link.

Check the G5 manual for further information regarding PCI requirements. 2nd link.

Any PCI network card will be compatible with your computer, so you shouldn't find any problems. Are you sure your card is bad though? If you're getting a slow connection, it could be that you're too far from the wifi source or there is something blocking the signal significantly etc.

yes you should be able to, otherwise just purchase a USB Wifi adapter. Wifi N is much faster than a lot of wired connections, and if you buy a descent USB adapter range shouldn't be an issue aka buy the $20 model not the $2 one.

Here's a link to a good PCI express adapter for $29 (a little more than you said but worth it) I've put this model in several PC builds of mine and they've never failed, hope this helps.

I wouldn't waste a PCI-E slot on a wireless networking card to begin with. The board has 2 PCI slots also. If you MUST have wireless, get a PCI card. Keep in mind, you WILL lose internet speed on a wireless home network. Get wired if at all possible.
EDIT: And do NOT buy a USB wifi dongle as a REAL technician would tell you they have NOWHERE near the range of a card unless you buy one with an external antenna.
